A MOTHER’S EXAMPLE

I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.”   2 Timothy 1 : 5 (NIV)

When Paul wrote these words to Timothy, he was talking about Timothy’s faith.  He was talking about how Timothy grew in his faith because of the example of both his mother and grandmother.

I am so thankful to the Lord for the heritage of a Christian mother and grandmother for my children.  My mother, Irene, was truly an example to me of what it was to be a humble, sincere believer.  She spent many hours a week in prayer for her family, her church, her community, missionaries, and our church body.  She spent many hours a week studying the Word of God.  She glowed with the glow of one who “has been with Jesus”.  No one doubted her sincerity when she said she loved Jesus.  She took her responsibility to participate in midweek service of Bible Study and prayer seriously.  She took her responsibility to attend WMF meetings seriously.  She saw these things as opportunities to learn and serve the Lord.

When troubles arose in the lives of her family members or her, she did not fret but she trusted the Lord to work things out.  She knew that many times she had no control over what happened, but she knew the “One who holds tomorrow” and she knew He held her hand through all things.

I am so grateful to the Lord for my mother’s example.

I am also truly grateful to the Lord for my mother-in-law, Margaret’s, example of sincere faith and grace.  God has blessed me with another wonderful example of strength and faith in the Lord.  Margaret raised a large family in the parsonage. She has blessed me by being a wonderful mother-in-law and grandmother to my children.  We are always assured of her prayers for us and that certainly means much to us.  Margaret, too, has spent many hours in prayer and studying the Word of God in her quiet times as well as in the Bible study times and WMF times at her church.  I know those opportunities mean much to her. We are truly grateful to her for her humble example of grace and strength.

As we approach this Mother’s Day, I pray that each of you who are Moms will know that you are loved.  I pray that each of you who are daughters will be sure to let your Moms know you love them.  If your Mom is not with you any- more take time to look back and think about the times you had with your Mom.  I pray that those times were good times.  If they were not, ask the Lord to help you forgive your Mom if she hurt you.  Ask the Lord to help you love her in spite of the difficult times.  He is able to do that you know.

Won’t you also thank the Lord for your mother-in-law?  I know sometimes, in this world, mother-in-laws are not popular topics of conversation – at least good conversation.  I pray that even if you don’t always see eye-to-eye with your mother-in-law, you will pray for her and tell her you are grateful for your husband who she brought into this world.

Most of all, may we who are mothers and grandmothers, be good examples of faith just as Lois and Eunice were for Timothy.
