                       Women's Missionary Federation

Of the Association of Free Lutheran Congregations

                   (WMF of AFLC)

WE ARE THE WOMEN OF THE AFLC

In 1962 the women of the AFLC banded together to help further the work of the church.  The society they formed became the Women’s Missionary Federation, working at home and abroad to further love in the kingdom of God, to unite the women of the AFLC in missions and Christian education, and to organize missionary activities in the local congregations.

Our Name

The national and district organization of the women of the AFLC is called the Women’s Missionary Federation (WMF), however congregational women  are free to use that name or a specialized name for their local women’s group.

Our Commission

The Lord Jesus Christ, our Shepherd and Teacher, used various persons to be His witnesses.  Women were also called to serve, as indicated in Mark 15 :40, 41.  We dedicate ourselves to the great commission of the Lord Jesus Christ when He said, “Go in to all the world, and preach the gospel to all creation” ( Mark 16 :15).

Our Purpose

The purpose of the WMF is to awaken and deepen interest in and love for the kingdom of God, at home and abroad, thus sharing in the great missionary enterprise of the Christian Church.

WE LIVE IN HIM – We are the branches

“I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me, and I in him, he bears much fruit; for apart from Me you can do nothing” (John 15 :5).

You are a “branch” which bears fruit as you participate in God’s work.

WE WORK IN HIM -  We are servants

Remember the word that I said to you.  A slave is not greater than his master. If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they kept My saying they will keep yours also” (John 15 :20).

You are a “servant” as you help fulfill God’s will in Christian service.

WE SPEAK IN HIM -  We are witnesses

And you will bear witness also, because you have been with Me from the beginning” (John 15 :27).

You are a “witness” for Him through your support of the ministries of WMF.

  • Locally : Meetings of the local WMF may be held once a month or as often as the group wishes. Many creative ideas and suggestions for variety in the meetings are included in the annual resource packets sent in the fall of the year to each local president. The WMF Bible Study may be studied at this meeting or at another time, dividing into smaller groups. The women may decide to support Christian ministries in their area, and/or do quilting, make layettes, and send letters of encouragement to international missionaries.
  • District-wide : Like-minded Christian women meet together to be encouraged in their walk with Christ by attend the Spring and Fall Rallies in your state.
  • Nationally : The National WMF Day is celebrated once a year the day before the AFLC Annual Conference. Very little business is transacted during this time, instead we praise the Lord through worship and song, listen to encouraging speakers and Bible study leaders, and break out into special interest groups for further edification.
  • Internationally : Through encouraging notes, prayer, and financially, AFLC women support the following missionaries :

--Pastor Todd and Barb Schierkolk, Mexico

--Pastor Paul and Becky Abel, Brazil

--Pastor Jonathan and Tamba Abel, Brazil

--Jonni Sliver, Brazil

--Pastor Nathan and Rhoda Jore, Uganda

--Justo and Patricia Pillman, Ecuador

--Along with several other Pastors native to Mexico and Brazil
and several Pastors and Bible Women in India

The WMF gives prayerful assistance and financial support to the following AFLC ministries :

World Missions

The WMF offerings help support the AFLC World Mission work in the various countries that we have missionaries serving (see the list above).  We also have the STA Fund (Short Term Assistant) to help those approved by the Missions Board to help serve our missionaries on the field and the Missions Scholarship that is available for seminarians who are approved as missionary candidates for World Missions, Short Term Assistants and Missionary and Seminary wives who desire to continue their spiritual education.

Christian Education

Promotes the teaching of Christian truths for children through adults, through the Cradle Roll Packets to be presented to new parents to encourage them with Christian literature and information now that they have a new life in their home and their family has increased.  These packets can be used to reach those outside your church as well.  We also assist the Parish Education Board in the printing of materials, and contributions to the training of students at the Association Free Lutheran Bible School (AFLBS), and the Association Free Lutheran Theological Seminary (AFLTS).

Home Missions

The WMF offerings to this project go towards supporting our Home Missions work in setting up and establishing new congregations in the USA.

 WMF General Fund

This fund covers many projects including the materials that are printed and mailed from the WMF (Helping Hand, Heartline (for those who don’t have internet service), Bible Studies, Fall Resource Packets, and other necessary mailings.)  This fund also helps cover the Annual WMF Day expenses, office equipment, supplies and board teleconference meetings or travel, the salary for the Executive Secretary and the Women’s Outreach Coordinator as well as stipends for the National President and Treasurer.  When contributions exceed costs, the additional funds may be given to other ministries that have not reached their projected goals.
