Unstuck

We are currently going through “Unstuck” in our church — reading the book together, going through the free workbook that Tim has posted for this book on his website, and then having discussion together. The greatest impact this book has had is in opening people’s eyes to what it means to be a disciple of Christ. This book is not about how to evangelize or do ministry work, but instead about growing yourself in God’s grace, because once you do that, then you’re equipped to go and help others grow in God’s grace.

“Unstuck” was written by Dr. Tim Lane as “more easy to understand and apply” follow-up from his book “How People Change.” What is continually preached by Tim is creating a culture of growth and grace in the local church. But how does that happen? How does the church get to that point? It’s only through each member being a disciple of Christ, first seeing God’ grace in our lives, then learning to use God’s grace to transform us to be more like Christ. This book takes the reader through a nine-step process, the first eight of which are self-examination to get us grounded in God’s grace and growth, and then the last step is taking that same approach into the world and discipling others.

The book reveals that people don’t really understand what it means to do discipleship training. Most people seem to think that by discipleship training, they are going to be equipped for evangelism. It helps people see that discipleship is not the same as evangelism. True discipleship has to start with the individual first. Jesus spent his earthly ministry with his disciples, preparing them for the work that comes from being a follower of Christ., but they had to get to that part first! This meant understanding God’s grace in their own lives and how that grows them in their trust and reliance on God. The same goes for us today: we first grow in God’s grace, so that we can help grow others in his grace.
